A Beautiful Day for a Meaningful Cause: Carrot Supports Driving 4 Veterans at Encanterra
There are some events that remind you just how powerful a community can be when it comes together for a shared purpose—and the 9th Annual Driving 4 Veterans Charity Golf Event at Encanterra Country Club was exactly that.
On a beautiful spring morning, 144 golfers gathered on the course, welcomed by clear blue skies, a light breeze, and great company. The atmosphere throughout the day was filled with gratitude, connection, and a shared commitment to supporting veterans and their families across the Mesa and greater Phoenix community.
Hosted at Encanterra Country Club, the event brought together an incredible group of sponsors, including national organizations like Humana and Edward Jones, along with many local businesses including Carrot LASIK & Eye Center as the sponsor of the highly-anticipated pre-tournament flyover. Each golfer received a thoughtfully prepared goodie bag, setting the tone for a day that was both well-organized and deeply meaningful.

For the Carrot LASIK & Eye Center team, serving as the Flyover partner for this outing was not simply a community sponsorship. Dr. Matthew Hammond and Dr. Michael Herion, the physicians who founded and own Carrot LASIK & Eye Center in Mesa, are both United States military veterans. Dr. Hammond completed his ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Herion currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve and was awarded an Air Force Commendation Medal for his service in the Global War on Terror. When an event like Driving 4 Veterans comes to their community, showing up is not a business decision — it is a reflection of who they are.
The flyover served as one of the most powerful moments of the day. As planes soared overhead, leaving trails across the sky, the course grew still. Conversations went silent. It was a moment that stirred pride and reflection—a reminder of the sacrifices made by our service members to protect our country.
“It is our honor and privilege to not only have served, but to continue to care for and support our veteran brothers and sisters in all of their endeavors,” reflected Michael Herion, MD.
Carrot LASIK & Eye Center has been part of the Mesa community since its founding, and that community connection is something Dr. Hammond and Dr. Herion take seriously. Both physicians live locally — a short drive from the practice on Dobson Road — and both have chosen to build their careers here specifically because of the community they wanted to be part of. Supporting Driving 4 Veterans is one expression of that commitment. It is also a way to honor the broader veteran community that both doctors belong to and care deeply about.
The day continued with a silent auction and a lively luncheon featuring a live auction, offering even more ways for attendees to support the cause while enjoying time together.
At Carrot LASIK & Eye Center, supporting events like this is a way to honor not only the military service of our founders and surgeons Drs. Hammond and Herion, but also to salute the service of so many others. It was a beautiful day of golf, community, and purpose—and one we are proud to have been part of. We’re already looking ahead to next year’s milestone event.
We hope to see you at the 10th Annual Driving 4 Veterans Charity Golf Event—it’s going to be a special one.
